Stage 3 · Contradiction 4 of 7
Avoidance

4. Avoidance

Avoidance is the interior face of Stage 2's greed category - greed turned inward, acquiring the comfort of not-doing at the cost of what needs doing. The heart meditation is particularly useful here: the shift into heart awareness interrupts the avoidance momentum in a way that thinking about avoidance cannot.

Daily Awareness Prompt

"What am I avoiding right now?"

Memorize this. Carry it into the day as a live question, not a thought you're having about yourself.

Core Tension

Necessary action versus the escape from discomfort.

What's Actually Fragmenting

Avoidance splits attention between what you know needs doing and the pull toward anything that isn't that. The split is not neutral. It creates a background load - a low-grade awareness of the undone thing - that runs continuously, consuming attentional energy without producing any forward movement. The thing avoided grows in psychological weight the longer it's avoided.

The Belief Underneath It

Discomfort means I should delay.

What This Looks Like in Real Time

  • Checking the phone instead of starting the thing
  • Switching tasks when resistance rises
  • The 'I'll do it later' that has survived three days
  • The anxiety before beginning that gets managed by not beginning
  • The organizing and planning that never quite produces the start

The thing avoided grows in psychological weight the longer it's avoided. Beginning is almost always easier than the anticipation of beginning. The work is not to eliminate the resistance - it's to act before the resistance decides for you.

The Required Intervention

When you notice avoidance, begin the task immediately. No preparation. No planning. No getting ready to start. Work for five minutes only. The five minutes is not the task - it is the interruption of the avoidance pattern.

Rule: Action precedes relief.

Evening Reflection

What did I avoid today? What did avoidance cost? Where did I act anyway? What happened after starting?

"Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will worry about itself. Today's trouble is enough for today." - Matthew 6:34

Avoidance draws energy from an imagined future difficulty. The thing being avoided is almost never as costly as the sustained attention required to keep not doing it. Begin. The anxiety that precedes action is not a warning. It is the sound of the avoidance pattern defending itself.

Daily Structure While Working This Contradiction

Morning: Read the awareness prompt - "What am I avoiding right now?" Memorize it. Then sit for 10 minutes. Begin with heart meditation - locate your sense of self. The descent you have been practicing is beginning to feel less like a journey and more like a recognition. Let awareness settle in the heart, remain. Carry the prompt into the day as a live question.

During the day: When you catch the contradiction activating, use the heart meditation before responding. Apply the rule: Action precedes relief..

Evening: 10-minute sit. Score the contradiction (0-4). Answer the reflection question. Score the five Stage 2 categories.
