Stage 2 - Stop Breaking Things
Category 2 - Week 3

Remember Your Why

Before you continue, write down why you're doing this work. Not the general reason - your specific one. You'll be reminded of it as you go.

Category 2 - Deception

One week minimum, as many as it takes.

You need 7 consecutive days scoring 3.0 or higher in Deception specifically before the next category opens. If a day drops below that, the count restarts - not as punishment, but because that's genuinely what the number is meant to show: a sustained pattern, not a lucky streak.

"Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy." - Proverbs 28:13

A full correction here means going back and telling the accurate version - not just resolving internally to be more honest next time. "Actually, that's not quite right, here's what really happened" is the uncomfortable, actual target. Watch for the trap on the other side of that: an elaborate confession that keeps going until the other person is reassuring *you*. That's not correction - it's the same orientation wearing contrition as its outfit. State the correction. Stop.

Today's Practice

If you catch a deception today, go back and give the accurate version in one clear sentence. Don't extend it into something more than the moment requires.

Evening Sit + Scoring

10-minute sit. Score.

  • 0: Didn't catch it, ran on autopilot.
  • 1: Caught it after - retrospective awareness, real but late.
  • 2: Caught it during, aware, and kept going anyway - harder to admit than a zero or a one, more useful than either.
  • 3: Caught it during and changed course - the target.
  • 4: Saw the setup forming and chose differently before it started - rare, and worth noting when it happens.

"Fear God, and speak words of appropriate justice." - Qur'an 33:70

This category is easiest to interrupt in low-stakes moments. The real test is the conversation where the accurate version costs you something - a difficult boss, a partner you don't want disappointed in you, a story you've told so many times the lie feels load-bearing. Most people have exactly one relationship where the full correction never quite happens, even once it's become normal everywhere else. Name that relationship honestly today.

Today's Practice

Name, honestly, the one person or context where you under-correct this category. You don't have to act on it today - just name it.

Evening Sit

10-minute sit. Score.

"True words are not beautiful; beautiful words are not true." - Tao Te Ching 81

A reset is information, not failure - the same lesson as every category before this one. But watch the opposite trap too: a clean streak of 3s and 4s starting to feel like proof you've simply become an honest person. That feeling is the same orientation returning, relocated to the scoreboard.

Today's Practice

If today's streak is strong, notice any pride in the number itself and let it go, the same way you'd let go of any other instance of this category.

"We have renounced secret and shameful ways... by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience." - 2 Corinthians 4:2

Seven consecutive days at 3.0 or higher in Deception means the behavior is no longer your default - not that you've become incapable of it. When you've held criterion, move to Category 3: Theft and Appropriation, carrying the sitting practice, the weekly question, and this category's tracking forward with you.

Today's Practice

Review your last seven days of scores. If you've held criterion, move to Category 3 tomorrow.

Evening Sit

10-minute sit. Score. - Kasey, please put this in a popup box that needs to be clicked on, but not in red! A note from Father Ken I want to take a moment to congratulate you. You have managed to slog your way through the first half of this stage - and, oh my God, I know what a slog it is! It's disheartening to say the least to have to look at these behaviors in ourselves. They don't show the best of us, do they? And it's hard, day after day, to sit and look at these parts of ourselves that we would rather not acknowledge. So, I want to acknowledge your courage and your perseverance. You are doing really hard work, and when you're in the middle of a slog like this, it can seem never-ending and even discouraging. That said, I want to encourage you to keep going. You won't see the payoff for a while, but it's there. You are beginning, in these early stages, to pull the fragmented parts of yourself together. It may not seem like this, but that's what's happening below the surface. If you persevere, you will be able to use this united sense of self and make great progress in your spiritual journey. And that's what it's about, isn't it? We are united in our desire to draw closer to the Divine, however we may conceive of it. We are united in our longing to return home, and united in our desire to enjoy that wonderful sense of belonging that goes hand in hand with our return. So, you're doing just fine, even though it may seem hard right now. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will get there! Onward, then...
