Stage 2 - Stop Breaking Things
Category 2 - Week 1

Category 2 - Deception

Lying, misrepresentation, and withholding relevant truth - including the technically-true statement designed to mislead, the omission calculated to protect your image, and the version of events that consistently positions you in the best possible light. It includes self-deception rationalized as discretion.

Week 1 - Seeing: no scoring yet. You're establishing that this category is real in your own life, moving deliberately from its most dramatic, unmistakable form early in the week to its smaller, easier-to-miss forms by the end of the week.

"Do not deceive one another. Do not swear falsely by my name. I am the Lord." - Leviticus 19:11

Start with what nobody would argue about: the fabrication, the cover story, the flat denial of something you actually did. Notice any instance of this scale, in yourself or around you - you're not scoring yet.

Today's Practice

Watch today for the unmistakable version - a clear fabrication or denial, yours or someone else's.

Evening Sit

10-minute sit. No scoring this week - just sit.

"Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight." - Proverbs 12:22

Now the middle register: the sentence that's accurate but built to mislead. The omission that changes what your listener understands. The version of an argument you'd never repeat in front of the other person. This is the most common form of this category, and the one people are best at not counting.

Today's Practice

Notice one technically-true-but-misleading statement today - something left out, something phrased to avoid the whole picture.

Evening Sit

10-minute sit.

"Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body." - Ephesians 4:25

Now the smallest version: the exaggeration that makes an anecdote land better, the detail left out because it complicates the picture, the instantly-generated best-light version of events. This is the version with the most structural weight, precisely because it happens constantly and rarely gets named as deception at all.

Today's Practice

Notice one small exaggeration or omission today - the kind that makes a story land better without technically lying.

Evening Sit

10-minute sit.

"Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place." - Psalm 51:6
