Stage 3 · Contradiction 1 of 7
Distorting the Truth

1. Distorting the Truth

Stage 2's deception category viewed from the inside. In Stage 2 you tracked what happened. Here you track the mechanism - the moment of choosing the shaped version over the real one. That moment is faster than you think. The heart meditation slows it down enough to see.

Daily Awareness Prompt

"Where am I altering reality - even slightly?"

Memorize this. Carry it into the day as a live question, not a thought you're having about yourself.

Core Tension

The alignment between reality and your version of reality.

What's Actually Fragmenting

When you distort truth - even slightly - you split your attention between what is and what you're presenting. Part of you knows the real version. Part of you is managing the presented version. That split is constant. It operates in background processes even when you're not actively lying. It is a concentration drain that never fully switches off.

The Belief Underneath It

If I tell the full truth, I lose control - of the image, the outcome, the approval.

What This Looks Like in Real Time

  • Exaggerating for effect
  • Omitting key details that would complicate the picture
  • Shaping a story so it lands better
  • Choosing the technically-true version over the actually-true version
  • Adding emphasis that changes meaning without changing facts

The Required Intervention

Stop mid-statement. State only verifiable facts. Remove the exaggeration before the sentence ends. If you catch it after - correct it in the same conversation, same day. Full correction, not a mental note.

Rule: State the fact. Remove the effect.

Evening Reflection

Where did I distort truth today? What was I trying to control? What would have happened if I'd told the exact version?

"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." - John 8:32

Every contemplative tradition identifies truth-telling as structural, not moral. The attention freed by stopping distortion does not go somewhere else. It becomes available for what this work requires. That is what this passage means. Not a reward. A mechanism.
