Stop Breaking Things

The four behaviors that cancel everything you're trying to build.

This is the only stage every tradition agrees on. Not most. All six. Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Daoist. Six different maps of the inner life, shaped over centuries in cultures that didn't talk to each other, and every single one of them puts the same work at the beginning.

That unanimity is not coincidence. It is the most emphatic structural finding in the research this curriculum is built on. When traditions that agree on almost nothing else agree on this, you pay attention.

The finding is not moral. It is mechanical.

Every active contradiction between what you say you value and how you actually behave is a concentration leak. Energy that cannot be recovered for anything that follows.

You cannot work toward the dissolution of self-centeredness while simultaneously reinforcing it through action. The two movements cancel each other. A person who lies regularly carries the cognitive load of managing multiple versions of reality. These loads are not neutral. They drain exactly the attentional capacity that everything after this stage requires.

Why This Stage Cannot Be Skipped

There are four behavioral categories. Most people have one or two that dominate. The work is not to achieve zero incidents - that's perfectionism, and it's its own trap. The work is to interrupt the default. To stop operating on autopilot in these areas.

Everything that follows in this program - the concentration work, the interior examination, the absorption practices - is built on what you establish here. If you rush this, you will hit a ceiling later and not understand why. If you do it honestly, you will feel the difference before you finish.

The Four Categories

You work these four categories one at a time, in order - not all at once. Read all four now so you know what's coming, but you'll only actively track the first one to start. Notice your first reaction to each. If you feel resistance toward one of them - if your mind moves quickly to explain why your situation is different - that's the category to watch most closely when its turn comes.

1. Violence and Harm

Physical, verbal, or relational injury inflicted on others. This includes contempt, dismissal, and the use of language as a weapon. It includes the cold shoulder, the cutting remark, the passive withdrawal designed to punish. It does not require raised voices or physical contact. Harm happens quietly in most people's lives.

This one is easy to underestimate. You're not violent. You don't hit people. Fine. But contempt is violence. Dismissal is violence. The ability to make someone feel small with a single well-placed sentence is violence. Track it all.

2. Deception

Lying, misrepresentation, and withholding relevant truth. This includes the technically-true statement designed to mislead, the omission calculated to protect your image, and the version of events you tell that consistently positions you in the best possible light. It includes self-deception rationalized as discretion.

This is the most common category for most people. Not dramatic lying - the constant small adjustments to the story. The exaggeration that makes the anecdote land better. The detail left out because including it would complicate the picture. Track the micro-deceptions. They're the ones with the most structural weight.

The digital behavior that would not survive transparency. The version of events you share that positions you in the best possible light. The story shaped for effect, told so many times it begins to feel like memory. Track the micro-deceptions. They are the ones with the most structural weight.

3. Theft and Appropriation

Taking what belongs to another. This extends beyond material goods to include credit, time, attention, and emotional labor taken without consent or reciprocation. Showing up to a conversation to extract rather than exchange. Taking credit for work that was shared. Using someone's time in ways they didn't agree to.

This category surprises most people. They don't think of themselves as thieves. But appropriation of emotional labor - treating people as resources for your processing, your venting, your need for validation - is in this category. Track it honestly.

4. Sexual Impropriety

Sexual behavior that violates consent, commitment, or another person's dignity. This category requires honest self-examination, not legal analysis. The legal threshold is not the relevant standard here. The relevant standard is: did my behavior respect the full humanity of the other person?

This includes flirtation used as manipulation, the relationship maintained for convenience rather than honesty, the digital behavior that would not survive transparency. If you have to ask whether something belongs in this category, it probably does.

How the Tracking Works

Each category moves through three phases: a week of Seeing (no scoring, just learning to spot it), a week of Catching (scoring begins), and Correcting (interrupting it in real time, until you hold 7 consecutive days at 3.0 or higher). Only then does the next category open.

  • 0 - Didn't catch it. Autopilot. The behavior ran without any awareness. You only recognized it afterward, if at all. This is the starting condition for most people. It is not failure - it is the baseline.
  • 1 - Caught it after. Retrospective awareness. The behavior happened. You recognized it afterward. The awareness is real but it arrived too late to change anything today.
  • 2 - Caught it during. Aware. Didn't stop it. You knew the behavior was happening while it was happening. The awareness was present. The interruption wasn't. Score it anyway.
  • 3 - Caught it during. Stopped and corrected. You caught it in real time and changed course. Awareness plus action. This is the target behavior.
  • 4 - Caught it before. Recognized the setup before acting. You saw the situation setting up and chose differently before the behavior started.

A score of 3 or 4 does not mean a perfect day. It means the behavior is no longer running you. That's the entire goal.

The Gate

To advance from one category to the next, you need 7 consecutive days scoring 3.0 or higher in that specific category. A single day that drops below 3.0 resets the count for that category. The reset is not a punishment. It is a signal. It means the pattern has not yet shifted there. Once all four categories have individually cleared this bar, the gate to Stage 3 opens.

The Weekly Question

Once per week - same day each week - write one honest answer to this question:

Where did I assert my needs at the expense of another this week?

Write a specific answer. Not a generalization. One moment, one person, one situation. If you can't find one, look harder. Everyone who is honest with themselves can find one.

The 10-Minute Sit

The sitting practice from Stage 1 continues here without interruption. If you haven't established it yet, start now.

Sit still. Quiet place. No phone. Ten minutes, morning or evening - your choice. No technique required yet. When you sit and observe the mental noise, you are watching the machinery that produces these categories. The sit makes the source visible.

Most people at this stage discover that the sitting and the behavioral tracking reinforce each other in an unexpected way. When you sit in the morning and notice the mental noise - the low-grade planning, the replaying of yesterday, the positioning for tomorrow - you begin to recognize that same noise as the engine driving these categories.

The deception, the acquisition, the status management: they don't come from nowhere. They come from that noise. You are not trying to silence the noise during the sit. You are learning to observe it. That's enough for now.
